East Riding Council need to be bolder, more radical in its thinking.

Let’s get the basics right. We will be approachable and visible. Holding regular one-on-one and group meetings with residents and businesses.

Driffield people come first. We’ll be a strong united voice fighting for investment in Driffield and campaigning on the issues which matter most to local residents.

Extensive developments have left Driffield lacking essential amenities such as Schools, Dentists and GP’s. Whilst more affordable and social housing is required, future planning decisions should be influenced by the needs of residents. Developments beyond a few houses should come with a Community Infrastructure Levy payment which is designed to fund the local facilities required.

Put the environment front and centre. Local Conservatives want a petrol station building next to a rare chalk stream and have voted to charge exorbitant rates on public electric vehicle chargers. It doesn’t seem like they really believe in the Climate Emergency.

We have signed up to UK Divest:

“If elected, we will do all we can to ensure the council pension fund ends investment in fossil fuels within the next five years and invests in a just transition to a zero carbon economy.”

Heath and Alfred Bean. Driffield Conservative councillors wanted to move the food bank and Credit Union to Alfred Bean, we successfully argued against that. Labour got Alfred Bean Hospital designated an ‘Asset of Community Value’. Now we need fresh ideas and open discussion for its future.

We have a huge problem with people stuck in hospitals at the moment and an empty hospital in Driffield. A relatively small investment in our hospital could transform it into Step Down Beds. Small community hospitals are very important, we need fresh heads around the table to save Alfred Bean.

Labour will work with local practices to overcome the barriers they face. Health and Social Care is a nationwide crisis, but it doesn’t mean East Riding Council has to sit back and let services get worse and worse.

Plan for people, not profit. East Riding want to sell a public plot of land to a property developer. We support residents who want a biodiverse educational park instead.

Policing. Driffield is suffering from a spate of anti-social behaviour. Where are the new officers we were promised? There is no set date for their arrival. People feel safer when police officers are walking the beat, we want more police officers permanently stationed at Driffield.

Youth services. Young people have very little to do in Driffield. Youth services would be a priority for us, getting young people involved in the future outlook of Driffield is essential.

Thinking differently

Rather than squeezing 30 houses into the land behind Lockwood Street, why not have a bio-diverse educational park, a green space for residents to relax in?

Driffield’s evening economy suffers from a lack of restaurants, what about a council owned community restaurant/kitchen, serving wholesome healthy food whilst also teaching people how to cook healthy meals?

Richard, Wendy and Tom want to do things differently. Ask yourself, when was the last time you saw your Driffield East Riding Councillor walking the streets, talking with residents or local business? Like us you’ve probably never witnessed it. This would be the first thing to change, we’ll be approachable and visible.

We believe being an East Riding Councillor is much more than potholes, we need to be bolder and more radical in our thinking than the current crop of complacent councillors. There is so much untapped potential in Driffield, for example, the canal has been closed for over 30 years; think of the boost to the town if it were reopened.

It’s time for change. Change will only happen by electing three Labour candidates so we have influence over decisions.
